Since its opening in 1981, Singapore Changi Airport has been known for its excellence and exacting standards in airport service quality, receiving more than 390 awards and accolades from organisations such as Skytrax and Business Traveler, and 23 Best awards in 2011 alone.  As one of the busiest international passenger and cargo airports in the world, the airport continues to maintain its reputation for setting standards in airport service quality despite the strong competition from newer airports in the region.

Operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, the energy consumed by lighting in buildings and outdoor areas of airports constitute a substantial percentage of the energy usage at airports.  With the airport occupying 1,300 hectares of land, and a combined terminal floor area of more than one million square metres, the energy consumed for lighting at Singapore Changi Airport is significant.  With a commitment to and a mindset tuned towards environmental sustainability and green initiatives, the airport chooses to reduce their energy consumption by improving energy efficiency through the implementation of energy efficient lighting as well as several other measures to cut down their carbon emissions.  In an effort to reduce their carbon footprint as well as operational cost, the airport used the IEQ IntelliNRG™ range of LED and Induction lights to illuminate the different facilities.

Despite having a wattage of more than half of conventional metal halide and fluorescent lamps, IEQ IntelliNRG™ range of LED and Induction lamps have high lumen efficacies and a superior colour rendering index (CRI), thus producing the clearest vision.  Furthermore, conventional lamps produce large amounts of heat.  The low heat emissions of the IEQ IntelliNRG™ lamps therefore reduce air-conditioning costs.

With extremely long lifespans, IEQ IntelliNRG™ LED and Induction lights can last for 50,000 hours as compared to the 10,000 hours of conventional lamps.  This long-lasting quality of IEQ IntelliNRG energy efficient lamps is a benefit that curtails the need to re-lamp yearly to once every five years, substantially reducing maintenance costs.

Another benefit that reduces the need for yearly re-lamping is the exceptionally low lumen degradation of IEQ IntelliNRG™ Induction and LED lights.  The high lumen degradation of metal halide and fluorescent lamps in contrast, brings about more lamp wastage as frequent re-lamping is needed to maintain the required lux levels for each area.

By replacing conventional floodlights, high bays, and tube lights in the various areas of the airport with the energy saving lighting technology of IEQ IntelliNRG™ lamps, energy consumption is immediately halved.  As the airport operates all year round, the energy and operational expenditure from lighting is greatly reduced by more than 55% due to the exceptional ROI of IEQ IntelliNRG™ lamps.
