Resorts, hotels and motels across the world are guilty culprits of wasting most of their electricity on lighting. Experiencing extensive operation hours, heavy footfall, and high energy consumption as well as high carbon emissions, these places keep most, if not all, of their lights burning 24 hours a day. As a result, a substantial amount of electricity is wasted on lighting hallways, elevators, lobbies, and other gathering places in hotels that usually are not filled with people every hour of the day.

Conscious of this ecologically destructive and cost consuming concern of hospitality management, Dorsett Hotel and Residences Singapore decided from the design stage to employ the use of state of the art energy efficient lights in and around the project to reduce its carbon footprint as well as its operating costs. Due to the nature of the hotel, lights in general areas are switched on 24 hours a day, constituting a significant portion of the project’s electricity consumption. By making use of IEQ’s range of energy efficient IntelliNRG™ lamp, the hotel is able to cut down more than 45% of the lighting electricity consumption as compared to using conventional lighting technologies such as fluorescent, metal halide, incandescent and halogen, and achieve their GreenMark certification.

With the employment of more than 95% LED lights in and around the project, Dorsett Hotel and Residences is able to stake its claim as the first new-built hotel in Southeast Asia to be outfitted with more than 95% LED lights.

To mark the hotel as a landmark and the iconic gateway to the vibrant heritage-filled quarter of Chinatown, staggered IntelliNRG™ LED strip lights and animated LED façade lights were lined across the distinctive bronze tinted glass hotel façade. Moving beyond the functional, lights were also placed strategically to highlight the architectural and interior designs while maintaining a cheerful, stylish and welcoming atmosphere.

Using IEQ IntelliNRG™ LED Strip Lights along the underside of stairs, such places that were once often overlooked can now be enhanced artfully. Ceiling cove lights were also added in the hotel by using IEQ IntelliNRG™ LED Shadowless Tubes, which produce a consistent and seamless glow as opposed to the conventional cove lights that result in dark spots on the ceiling. Installed in the driveway, corridors and in the hotel rooms, the ceiling cove lights give a warm, soothing ambiance that puts visitors at ease. Easy and simple to replace, the hotel also extensively features IEQ IntelliNRG™ LED MR16 and PAR30 in the hotel lobby and hotel rooms. To improve the aesthetics of the outdoor areas of the hotel and residences, a wide range of IP65 IEQ IntelliNRG™ LED lights were used to accent various landscape features and to create a relaxed and restful environment.

Also another first, the hotel is the first hotel in Southeast Asia to use plasma lighting to illuminate one entire face of its 10-storey building façade. With an extremely long, bright and even light throw that is unrivalled by conventional lighting technologies such as metal halide or special mercury vapour lamps, this energy efficient lamp uses significantly lesser energy to flood the hotel façade. More than just energy efficient, IEQ IntelliNRG™ Plasma Floodlights are also ecologically friendly and environmentally sustainable as they contain no mercury vapour or fluorescent substances, do not pollute the environment or experience environmental degradation, and produce very negligible amounts of electromagnetic or Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) emission. Its long lifespan also significantly reduces the need for re-lamping frequently, thus reducing the material wastage as well as significant re-lamping costs.

Despite having a wattage that is more than half of conventional lamps, the IEQ IntelliNRG™ energy efficient lamps have high lumen efficacies and a superior colour rendering index (CRI) that produces the clearest illumination. The choice of illuminating the hotel with more than 95% of sustainable LED lights has enabled the hotel to save more than 45% of its lighting energy consumption.

The low lumen degradation, low maintenance costs, long lifespan of 50,000 hours and low failure rate of IEQ IntelliNRG™ LED lights make them last more than 5 to 20 times longer than conventional CFL or halogen light bulbs. This reduces the need for frequent re-lamping and reduces the overhead costs of the hotel. As opposed to traditional light sources, the low heat emission of IEQ IntelliNRG™ LED light bulbs help the hotel to save on their air-conditioning costs as they do not make the air-conditioning work harder to keep the building cool. As a result, by employing IEQ IntelliNRG™ energy efficient lights from the outset has allowed the energy consumption of the hotel to be immediately halved.

With the rapid improvement in lighting technology, energy efficient lights have become extremely flexible in their range of applications, making them ideal for achieving and enhancing architectural and interior design elements of the hotel while being environmentally sustainable and lowering operation costs.
